Ideas for Class Lessons

English:

  • Write a character description of Spike and Prickles.
  • Write a newspaper article of the events that took place.
  • Create a chronological report of events in the story.


Maths:

  • Create your own Great Oak Tree using 2D or 3D shapes.
  • Create a scale for the map of Oakwood Forest
  • Calculate the area of the forest
  • Calculate the distance from The Great Oak to Willow Waters
  • Calculate the height of HillTop
  • Calculate the inclines of HillTop and Short Hill


D&T:

  • Design a safe home for Spike and Prickles.
  • What materials will you use? How could you improve your design?


Art:

  • Find or create a template of a hedgehog, use a fork to print different coloured spikes on the hedgehog’s back.
  • Create different characters from the story using clay to sculpt the creatures.


Science:

  • Create a weather map detailing the different weathers experienced in the story.
  • Record your own weather report.
  • Draw a diagram of a food chain using some other animals in the story, eg. foxes, deer.


Geography:

  • Draw an aerial view map of Oakwood Forest.
  • Label Eastwood, Westwood, Southwood, Northwood and The Great Oak Tree.


PE:

  • Rabbit hole: Some children are rabbits, some are foxes. Rabbits and foxes run in designated area, but rabbits can find a safe zone in a ‘rabbit hole’ (hoop and cones). When caught by a fox, a bunny becomes a ‘bouncing bunny’ and must hop on their hands and feet until another bunny tags and frees them.


Music:

  • Create different types of music for the parts of the story, eg. dramatic loud music for the storm, fast energetic music for when the animals are playing.
