The Adventures of Spike and Prickles books are for seven year olds and over, however younger children will love them too, but may need a little help. Every adult and teenager who has read the book so far, love it, and have commented how the chapters are the perfect length for one to be read as a bedtime story each night.
Book One – ‘A Forest Divided’ is the first in a series of books about the adventures of two young hedgehogs, Spike and Prickles, and their friends, Ricky and Rosie (rabbits), and Sami and Stan (squirrels) who live in the wonderful Oakwood Forest.
The book starts with a great storm, which finds Prickles and her parents fearing for their lives with trees crashing down around them and their burrow filling with water. When the storm has finally passed, they discover it has brought down the great oak tree, which Oakwood Forest was named after. Life soon returns to normal, with the young hedgehogs, squirrels and rabbits exploring and playing games, until one day an army of machines arrived. The animals think the machines were there to remove the fallen tree, but soon discovered they are building a massive path, right through the middle of the forest, separating Spike, Ricky and Rosie from Prickles, Sami and Stan.
After a winter of hibernation, the hedgehogs wake up to find the path is now a busy road with hundreds of speeding cars, making it impossible for them to cross. Distraught at never being able to see each other again, one of the rabbits (Ricky), sets off on a journey to find a safe way to cross the road. After many days of travelling, he is just about to give up, when he finds a tunnel (culvert) under the road. He crosses, but wakes up the following morning to find that overnight rain has flooded it, stopping him crossing back. Stuck on the other side of the road, he decides to go and find Prickles and the squirrels, so he can bring them back to the tunnel and hopefully reunite them with Spike and Rosie.
The return journey is long, full of challenges and many dangers, which sees the animals having to come up with creative ways of scaling what appear to be impossible obstacles and seeing off attacks from less friendly forest animals.
Book Two – ‘The Foxes Revenge’, sees two angry foxes (Freddie and Fergie) keen on getting revenge on the hedgehogs and squirrels that outwitted them in ’A Forest Divided’. They track down the animals and cleverly plan an attack, but just as they are about close in on an injured Sami, something amazing happens that stops them. The story continues with the many challenges the animals face in getting Sami to someone who can save his life.
Book Three – ‘The Great Flood’, sees the animals homes on HillTop flooding, with Spike, Prickles, Ricky, Rosie, Sami and Stan being swept down the hill into a raging river. The story covers their struggles to avoid being crushed or drowned by the fallen branches and crashing waves. They find themselves stranded on an island in the middle of a lake and have to come up with a solution to cross the water and then overcome the many challenges they faced on the long, long journey back home.
